Photo print size in pixels
16×20 Print Size in Pixels
A 16 × 20 inch print needs 4800 × 6000 pixels at 300 PPI. It measures 40.64 × 50.8 cm and has a 4:5 aspect ratio.
16 × 20 in at 300 PPI: 4800 × 6000 px (28.8 MP)
At 240 PPI: 3840 × 4800 px · at 150 PPI: 2400 × 3000 px
16×20 in pixels at each density
Multiply each inch dimension by the density. The results are exact because both sides are whole inches.
| Density | Portrait | Landscape | Megapixels |
|---|---|---|---|
| 150 PPI | 2400 × 3000 | 3000 × 2400 | 7.2 |
| 200 PPI | 3200 × 4000 | 4000 × 3200 | 12.8 |
| 240 PPI | 3840 × 4800 | 4800 × 3840 | 18.4 |
| 300 PPI | 4800 × 6000 | 6000 × 4800 | 28.8 |

Nearest-pixel rounding can fall slightly below the target on one axis. Use Round up when the target is a strict minimum.
This is the canvas size. Changing a file’s PPI metadata alone does not create these pixels.

Will my photo fit 16×20 without cropping?
16 × 20 inches has the same 4:5 proportion as 8 × 10, so the same crop scales up to it.
| Example source | Cropped pixels | Image kept | Density at 20 × 16 in |

How many megapixels does a 16×20 print need?
At 300 PPI the print needs 28.8 megapixels after any crop; at 240 PPI, 18.4 MP; at 150 PPI, 7.2 MP. These are arithmetic targets, not a promise of print quality: focus, noise and viewing distance matter too.
Changing an image’s PPI setting without resampling only changes its intended print size. Read what changing DPI actually does before upsizing a file.
